Houston Texans Report: RT Derek Newton will not play in 2017

The Houston Texans have announced that one of their rising stars will be hitting the shelf for the entire season.

The Houston Texans have announced that one of their rising stars will be hitting the shelf for the entire season.

    Who am I talking about?

I’m sure that you already know by now just by looking at the headline but the news has come out affirming what we all likely knew was going to happen.

Yes, Derek Newton is done for the 2017 season before it even started.

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, Newton has been designated on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and any chances of him seeing the field this year have been dashed.

When your knees explode into oblivion, then you know it’s going to be rough road coming back.

Our knees do so such — they bend, they support our weight when we stand, walk or run.

When those bad boys aren’t working, it makes it incredibly difficult to do anything requiring mobility.

As in shuffling one’s feet across a line of players protecting their quarterback.

Now I may have been a bit exaggerated when described that his knees “exploded,” but I know I’m not too far off from that assertion.

In last year’s preseason, Newton sustained an injury to both of his patellar tendons against the Denver Broncos while trying to block Pro-Bowler/former Super Bowl-MVP Von Miller.

He fell backward and he eventually had to be carted off the field because the injury was so severe.

I’ve had so much high hopes for Derek as he was one of the more talented members on the offensive line.

Wilson also notes that he has been making steady progress as he still continues to recover from his malady.

He had a really good 2015 and the Houston Texans rewarded him with a five-year, $26 million deal.

Although it’s not his fault, freak injuries like these happen, the Houston Texans are hurting without him but they now have to look at other options to replace him for the time being.

At tackle, the Texans did draft Julién Davenport in the 4th round and just recently inked him to a four-year deal.

They also have Kendall Lamm and Chris Clark who are still under contract with the team.

With all of the talent coming their way, they may also find a free agent — whether current or undrafted — who can also fill-in for the void.

But the plan would likely to get Davenport to play a huge role — we may have no choice — but it would be more prudent to go with the vets already under contract.

But who knows what type of training camp Davenport will have?

    Maybe that assertion will change.

But nonetheless, I wish nothing but the best for Derek as I know he wants to be back out there and I hope someday that he will, whether it be as a Texan or elsewhere.

    Go Texans.
