Nike is about to make New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. the face of its NFL marketing campaign.

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, Nike has signed Beckham Jr. to a five-year deal worth nearly $5 million a year.

Rovell notes it is the richest shoe deal for an NFL player and about two times more than any previous deal Nike had with a football player.

    From ESPN:

"The deal will make Beckham a larger brand spokesman for Nike, including campaigns outside of football.

The deal got so big because Adidas wanted to take Beckham from Nike, sources said. Nike had the right to match the offer, which it did.

A Nike spokesman said the company wasn't commenting on the deal. The story was first reported by sneaker site

"It was a long process," Beckham's agent, Zeke Sandhu, told ESPN. "This proved he's an icon."

Beckham, 24, is in the final year of his original four-year rookie deal with the Giants. He is set to make about $1.8 million for the 2017 season, meaning Nike will pay him more than the Giants.

Beckham, a three-time Pro Bowler, has 288 catches in his first three NFL seasons with 35 touchdowns.

Beckham is one of the most productive wide receivers in the NFL but has also made headlines for several emotional outbursts on the field.

Beckham Jr. drew criticism from teammates, including quarterback Eli Manning, for unsportsmanlike penalties on 'Monday Night Football' against the Minnesota Vikings last season.

Beckham Jr. was so unruly on the sideline in a loss to the Washington Redskins last season that Giants head coach Ben McAdoo had to speak with him several times in an attempt to calm him down.

And who can forget his one-on-one confrontation with Josh Norman, formerly of the Carolina Panthers (now in Washington)?

The Giants recently exercised a fifth-year option for 2018, which will likely pay Beckham more than $8 million.

He can become a free agent in 2019. ... n_nfl.html
