There are good team mottoes, “Refuse to Lose” and “Do Your Job” and the like.
And then there are great team mottoes. With bad memories of their infamous Super Bowl collapse still fresh, the Atlanta Falcons are once again embracing a seemingly odd team motto entering the 2017 season, and it is excellent.
“Embrace the Suck.”
Surprisingly, the motto has nothing to do with the fact that Atlanta had a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl yet somehow lost to the Patriots (the team actually employed it last offseason, too). Instead, it’s a reminder of all the work a team has to do to merely get to the point where it can suffer a horrifying breakdown with hundreds of millions of people watching.
Here’s Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who talked with Coach Dan Quinn:
“Embrace The Suck,” Quinn repeated after he and his staff took rookies and first-year players through Friday’s minicamp. “Eat a crap sandwich with a smile. This is going to be hard. Your choice: It’s a victim’s mentality or a warrior mentality. It’s like, ‘I know this run is going to be long, and it’s going to be really hard. But here I go again.’
