Great news, they need someone better to backup Goff...

I know he was mentioned earlier this week by some in here and not all were for him to replace Mannion. I though think it would a good fit for this team.

Report: Rams to meet with QB Blake Bortles on Monday

The Rams will host Blake Bortles on a visit Monday, according to Mike Silver of NFL Network.

Their interest in Bortles would seem to indicate the Rams plan on moving on from Sean Mannion. Mannion, the Rams’ third round pick in 2015, is an unrestricted free agent. He’s spent the past couple of years as Jared Goff’s backup, and hasn’t seen any real regular season action other than a Week 17 spot start in 2017 with the Rams resting all of their starters.

Whether it’s through the draft of a free agent like Bortles, it’d be best for the Rams to replace Mannion. Bortles has made a ton of money the past few years and still is getting paid a guaranteed $6.5 million from the Jaguars for 2019, so the Rams could probably get him pretty cheaply. Bortles has become a punching bag in the media in recent years, but he’s more than capable of being a solid backup.

I was wondering how they could afford him....but there it is......the Jags owe him $6.5 mil

Great....I'd take him in a second.....he's 10X better than Mannion.

No doubt he's better than Manion and if they can get him on the cheap....I'm all for it. I doubt the Rams win any kind of bidding war though....be it years and deferred money or signing bonus...that type of cap killing stuff.

I always thought BB was hot and cold and with a little offensive genius type tutoring he might just want to get some of that to resurect a dying career.

He's a guy who's played in big games before. If he is a 1-2 year stop gap as a backup, would be solid for that position. Still in favor of drafting one as well.

It may not be a bad pick up. Let McVay do his magic. Remember, RG3 was bad in Washington and not he is good enough to be backup in Baltimore and I remember some on this forum wanted him as Goff's backup last year. Besides, if Goff went down, who would you rather have? Bortles or Mannion?

The backup QB position in the NFL is also important as another pair of eyes on the opposing D. I believe having a NFL vet whom has been a starter would help Goff during the game and in Prep.

Surprised his first visit is to the Rams, a few other teams are looking for starting QB's. His Rams salary would be offsetting the whatever the Jags owe him. Very good backup option.

i'm thinking this could be a very clever and calculated comp pick move too. if bortles looks great in preseason and a few games in 2019 and 2020 he'd probably sign a big contract for a team willing to give him a second chance.

This is a good point. It’s relative to position, so it won’t be a high pick, but anything is good.

the eagles did this and scored with nick foles. but let's be real, the eagles had no idea foles was going to be super bowl mvp. if we can upgrade over mannion and get a comp pick when bortles leaves, great.

ideally we have:

goff
bortles
rookie with upside like perez or some other late round/UDFA. i don't think brandon allen is it.

He would be but can’t see him accepting a back up roll until all teams have their QB filled. Especially Miami... they pick 13, but will the big ones be available? It would also put a little pressure on Goff, yes he’s the man BUT he’s always been the man without much competition!

Bortles will make bank this year regardless, so he should use the time with the Rams this year to reinvent himself and give people a chance to forget his 2018 issues. A little pressure on Goff could be good, as could Bortles’ sideline perspective.

The Rams entire history is steeped in shuffling QBs, even when they do well. The Rams will be good a majority of the time over the next decade and more, no matter who's on team..but I doubt Bortles would be there Long if at all.

Blake Bortles makes sense as Rams backup QB – if the price is right

A more reasonable contract for Bortles to get from the Rams would be one year at around $3-$3.5 million – something in the range of Nate Sudfeld and Chad Henne’s deals. Chase Daniel and Tyrod Taylor are on the next tier at $5 million and $5.5 million per year, respectively, and while it may not seem like a huge difference from $3-$3.5 million, that’s a big gap for a team like the Rams.

No reason to pay him that much.

No reason to pay him that much.

Based on PFT, the way I read it,,, we could get him for 1 Dollar,

If the language of the contract reads you take away the money earn from another team...

So why pay him more? I don't see any reason to.

Now if its more than 6.5mil, than Jax makes out in that contract...

But who is willing to pay him more? So I see this being a great fit for one year... At first I didn't want him,,, but didn't know the contract status.

But this looks like a nice deal for one year,,, and we could draft a QB in the Mid rounds to groom...

As soon as he was released, I thought it would be great to grab him as a stopgap if Goff goes down. Would be great IMO- and a bonus to get him cheap. Don't want to waste a draft pick on another QB. We have our guy, and until we don't, we should fill in with cheap vets for backup.

He should come cheap bc hes still getting paid by the jags this year. 1 year deal would be good for both sides. If he was willing, and if it was cheap, i would do a two year deal. He has experience in big games and has talent that just hasnt fully been devloped.

This move makes too much sense.
