Where does David Long Jr. fit among the corners?

With Long in tow, Los Angeles has potentially built depth for 2019 and brought in a player who can start for the team in the future.

OUTLOOK AT THE POSITION

The Rams have their starting corners back from last season in Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters. Talib was a significant difference-maker in Los Angeles’ defense last season, as the club allowed a passer rating of 74.5 and 10.4 yards per reception when he played during the regular season, and a 111.6 passer rating and 13.2 yards per reception when he didn’t, [per Pro Football Focus](https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/p ... on-success).

David Long Jr. excited to play close to home

When most of the Rams rookies arrived at the facility on Monday, they shuttled over to Thousand Oaks from LAX after landing at one of the nation’s busiest airports.

But cornerback David Long Jr. was different. A native of Southern California, Long had to only get on the highway and drive. And that’s a significant part of what has been so exciting for the 21-year-old cornerback out of Michigan as he begins his NFL career in his hometown.

David Long Jr.: "I’m not a huge talker, but I definitely like to challenge people throughout plays. That’s my mentality."

Unlike the media pundits I see Long as Talib's replacement next year. In Wade Phillips normal scheme, the X (i.e. #1) WR is in press coverage. The Z and Y receivers are normal played in off coverage. Talib normally covers the X WR and Long's game is press coverage. Long has the speed and decent length you need as a boundary CB. He's a bit raw as most rookies are, but people need to understand that CB is one of the more complex positions to learn in the NFL. It is extremely technique heavy which is why even very good CB's coming out of college will struggle to at least some degree making the transition to the NFL. Playing in relief of both Peters and Talib for a year is ideal for Long. I see his draft pick as getting very good value.

But in reality I think the real sleeper in this draft is Nick Scott. When I watch his play I see a starting boundary CB to play opposite of Long. I would be very surprised if he isn't at some point transitioned to CB. His lack of experience makes him a project player for sure, but I think he's the kind of guy who can be ready in his 3rd year if they start that transition now. As I pointed out the Z WR is normally in off coverage in Wade's base scheme. This plays to Scott's strength. As a safety it's a natural fit. On those occasions they are in zone coverage then again it would play to his strength.

I don't think he was drafted as strictly a ST's player. He can certainly play in ST's coverage but also as a KO returner as a rookie. His choice was a mild surprise because of how they are set up at safety, with Weddle, Rapp and Johnson. Where they are thin is at outside CB. IMO Troy Hill is too often outmatched and really is nothing more than a dime DB or backup. Hill lacks the length and deep speed they need. Scott has the deep speed and length to play on the boundary.

So in reality I see Long replacing Talib next year and Scott replacing Peters probably in 2021. I think they will offer a one year deal to Peters next year. I think Scott is insurance in the event Peters walks. That's why Scott being picked makes real sense to me. Snead is always looking ahead. You can see it in his drafts.
