I enjoy Bones and McVay calling fake punts but this was the STUPIDEST call ever - WHY?

1. We were on our 30
2. This was not a necessary surprise - when we do it we usually are automatically punting and it is a surprise that we fake it this was not a surprise situation.
3. Another reason is the Rams are usually down and in this case this was a super tight game and we were playing a mediocre QB/offense.
4. Most of all we were playing a super good defense - this is so not smart.
5. Also we went into fake formation for a long time giving the defense time to mentally wrap their head around it. There was no surprise.

What was the logic? This was the most stupid play of the game minus possibly a bomb on 4th down.

Super bad play call.

Exactly, everyone in the stadium knew it was going to be a fake punt before the ball was snapped, stupid call

Reminded me a Jeff Fisher type decision -- remember his idiotic fake punt against the Bills that every Buffalo player and coach was screaming a warning about before it even happened? One score game and the Rams were playing lights out d in that game. Did not make sense.

In tonight's situation, punt and play defense. It was like they gave into frustration and impatience. And I agree that we broadcast the fake well in advance. It was just a bad decision all the way around. We got lucky to get away without giving up points.

If today’s offensive game could be diluted down into one snap, that was it.

IMO.... doing fakes means you’re worried that you can’t beat the team you’re playing straight out. Bye week, second string QB, beaten down Steelers... shouldn’t have to fake

The execution was horrific, it wasn’t a fake punt it was a pass play. Why did they change formation and have hecker survey the defense.
It’s supposed to be a surprise that’s the point

Not the point thank God, but it should have never been called in that situation. It was the team who we did it against and the situation no need.

They did it earlier in the game and dropped out...I think Hekker is supposed to read a key....if he has the look he wants he snaps it if not he's supposed to drop back and punt it....I think that was on Hekker as I think he was supposed to check out and punt like he did earlier.

The “designed” running play by Bortles was just as bad.

It's amazing that McVay will try stupid stuff like a fake punt and the Bortles debacle, rather than make offensive changes like having Goff roll out a bunch, put in an extra TE, whatever.

I agree, what a joke. Bad idea in the first place but does he trust Hecker more than Goff.. and what was up with the weak throw.

Let's be all real here. McVay still thinks he's smarter than everybody else.everybody can predict his next calling on offensive plays. He needs an offensive coordinator that has the right mind to call running plays. If you're not going to use your running back then get rid of him. Coming out every Sunday you can predict exactly what this coach is going to call, again he thinks he's smarter than everybody else it shows that he gets out coached

It wasn't a fake punt. It was a poor pass play by our punter who broadcasters seem to think is a good quarterback but maybe not so much...lol

Funny thing I actually thought they should run more of these fake punts since Hekker has shown such good ability to convert. I was thinking why don't they send out Hekker to punt then just line up in a standard formation and throw it. Then they did it in this game and I kind of saw why. It has to be complete surprise for it to work. A running back picked him off after all.
