Stafford… My gut feeling…

Post by GlendoraRam »

Listening to McVay today, my gut feeling is Stafford has already made the decision to retire. Just sounded very different. Perhaps I am FOS but the neck issues and the “numbness in his legs” make me think the decision has been made.

Link? I saw the coach mcvay show yesterday and he sounded depressed. Could be from the situation and all but could also be from the fact the knows staff is done. And maybe....just maybe he feels SOMEWHAT responsible for this since he was the one that signed on for this o line crew. Staff was sacked and hit this season like he has never been in his entire career. Something was bound to happen. That is pretty obvious.

If Stafford is forced to retire, this isn't possibly a fireable offense?

Martz got Warner killed
McVay got Stafford killed

All in the name of having a threadbare Offensive line that either guy couldnt care less about. Both are passing game whores who think only about receivers, routes and hearing their names called as offensive gurus.

Everything on offense stems from a potent running game and offensive line protection of the quarterback.. EVERYTHING.

Interesting....

If true what the hell do we do at QB? Even scarier is McVay thought John Wolford could be a starter in this league.

I think you nail it. Listening to his news conference today, he sounded depressed, dejected and resigned to the fact. He mentioned he had been to speaking to Mathew AND Kelly. Kinda unusual a coach would be speaking to a players wife.
Here’s a link with a little more info: https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2022/1 ... y-week-12/

IMO… even if he does stay on…there is absolutely NO good reason to play Stafford again this season.

He should sit for the rest of the season and evaluate afterwards.

He’s 34 and still has game. There’s plenty of time to consider the situation.

The one problem is that they’re playing so bad it might not look worthwhile to return just so he get another 5-8 wins.

Plus getting the much-needed maximized infusion of good talent is more difficult when you ‘F them picks’.

McVay could make a big case for him to come back if they could get it together and play tough and committed down the stretch.

That's what I don't get. His offense relies on 2 things. Being able to run the ball so he can get the D to bite on play action. If you don't have an offensive line that can open up holes for the RB's then the D won't bite on play action. It's not hard to understand yet he put out a crap O-Line. We'll see if they go O-Line in round 2 of the draft. They should but I've been saying that for years now and they never do....
Judge our new coach in his third year. After all our last coach was to game strategy what Yoko Ono was to the Beatles...

He will be 35 by the time next season rolls around and he has taken allot of hits during his career.
And, even if he did come back, I don’t see this team winning more than a few games. Simply not with the risk.

So then the question becomes (assuming he retires) do we trade away those big contracts? AD, Ramsey, Kupp, Floyd??

JR and Floyd for sure. If Stafford retires how far behind is AD??? Kupp stays IMO

We have 2 ways we can play this, IF Stafford retires.

1. (The way I would play it, but management wont) Trade EVERYONE who will bring back equal value. Donald, Kupp, Ramsey, anyone else. The condition being a new GM AND HC are brought in to rebuild the Franchise in their image.

2. Bridge Quarterback (most likely play) with the condition that no more future HIGH Draft Picks are traded (Yeah, RIGHT)

These bridges could include
Jimmy Garoppolo
Derek Carr
Jared Goff
Carson Wentz
Geno Smith, and the like.

Disclaimer: if Stafford DOES retire AND Future Draft Picks are STILL traded, rather than ACCUMULATED ( to Draft our future QB) it will just be more negligence from what is STARTING to become an Organization that others laugh at

if Stafford does retire the 2024 draft is the big one. Caleb Williams is coming out. Sure would be nice to get him but we would have to have the 1st pick overall.
I'll pass on Wentz and Goff. I think you may see Trey lance on the trading block. All Jimmy G does is win.
Carr....his cap number is huge so not sure that is a reality.
What about the Washington QB right now? forget his name. that could be a good bridge.
also the backup in NE has proven some value.
Bottom line if Stafford is gone people need to be moved: JR, Floyd, Ashawn, Arob. Get some draft picks and reboot for the future.

If he retires he’s walking away from a shit ton of money. There’s nothing really here but “my gut tells me..”

Sorry. I prefer a credible new source with link rather than spit balling off of the tone of McVay’s news conference.

You dont think 2 Concussions in 2 games, and the second one not on any kind of "big hit", combined with a 14 year playing career with many other injuries and a Wife with her own BRAIN issues, and 4 kids, and having earned over 100 Million Dollars EASY, and already having a Super Bowl Ring, constitutes a decent chance that Staff hangs it up? Seriously????

By the way, Sean McVay did this....

Isn't EVERYTHJNG we discuss here spit balling? Not like any of us have any insiders or any pull. This forum is a tool for us junkies to get us to the next game, and then to the draft. We spit ball the entire trip.

In short, my opinion is YES. To some extent. I said it before AD signed the new contract that it was time to try and work something out with the Steelers. The team just got their ring, lost Miller and OBJ, and a few other free agents. Nowhere to go but down. AD was questioning himself if he still had the desire. He started his football career in Pitt, and it would have rekindled his fire to finish it there. I think they should still try it, as his fire will be even dimmer in LA next year. What's he worth? I don't know. Maybe a first and a second? I 'd take that if Pitt would pay it.

I'd keep Ramsey and Kupp, but strip the rest down to bare metal. Eat the cap ramifications for 23, and come back younger and stronger in 24. Probably with a new HC by then. It would be a fun rebuild, and by 24 they could shit can those freaking uniforms by then too!

It could happen. But I don’t see it. Now with that being said if he does play next year and the OL isn’t fixed then I could see him walking away. Mcvay said Stafford wanted to go back into the game, but HC shut him down anyway. So IMO unless Kelly forces it, he will return next year.

Depressing thread. First off, it's not McVays fault. He didn't put out a line he knew would be terrible at protection. He didn't manufacture the injuries. We all wish more priority went there yes. But these guys were supposed to get the job done(non injury 1st team). It's amazing how bad the backups are I agree.

If Stafford retires, gonna have to go with a vet backup...or yeah, trade a big contract. Go after a QB in 24. I hope AD stays. I think everyone underestimates how BAD the defense will be without him. He literally make others look like pros. If he's gone, we have bunch of jags. Will take a long time to rebuild.

Listen
IMO Stafford isn’t going to retire, unless Kelly forces the issue. He wants to play. And if he was even considering it or was going to, why are we going week to week with him, he would be shut down already if this was a topic of conversation between Stafford and Rams. You know the Rams would say ok staff, if you’re really considering retirement let’s shut you down now and maybe you’d reconsider for next year. But it’s a week to week thing. And Stafford doesn’t have a concussion now, maybe a neck thing. But IMO opinion and I truly feel he will return, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s this season too. Not that I agree with it. I’d shut him down retirement talk or not though

I think you hit the nail right on the head. I would guess what Kelly wants/thinks accounts for 90% of the equation, and with her health history, and 4 young children, that makes perfect sense.

Kelly IS GOING TO force the issue, just like Brenda Warner did. Hey, there's another one for the McVay/Martz similarity thread.

But seriously, no, in life, if you intend to STAY married for LIFE, like Kurt Warner and Matthew Stafford do, you LISTEN to your Wife.

If you're looking for an "out," like Tom Brady was, you DONT listen to your Wife.

Below from the Athletic, including discussion of where Stafford is at the moment. As an additional note, from my perspective, they should get the elbow checked/cleaned/fixed just to be sure.

I hope Matt Stafford does retire. He did what he was supposed to do. Win it all. At his age health and family need to be his priority.
