Snead kept to the plan
It's all about 2024. Per Snead the Rams will be aggressive again in 2024.
Snead said what plan was prior to this season. Snead quote “We decided to use this year, so we could really next year, start doing exactly what we have done in the past,” Snead says. “But this was a moment to take a pause, so that we can continue being aggressive.”

Re: Snead kept to the plan
I am glad you came around and joined me in this C29.
I just knew this season was all about next season long ago.
As soon as we started shipping off blue chip players for next to nothing in last off season... it was so obvious. I mean, who did we sign worth a damn? Nobody.
Now, do you still think we make the playoffs this year my man?

Heck yeah the rams can still make the playoffs. If Vikes (who lost Cousins) fans and Falcons fans can have hope, so can I.
I'm just not going to be upset if they don't bc this was a retool year anyway. I can be happy about wins and embrace the losses bc Rams benefit either way.
This is a stress free year for me. Like I've said all year, either way I'm good. The only thing that would worry me is if AD, Kupp or Stafford have a career threatening injury.
With Stafford (if something happens to him) my plan B is to draft a rookie in 1st/2nd round and sign Cousins to a one year deal, if you want to compete in 2024.

Re: Snead kept to the plan
Our GM & our scouting staff need to hit on the 1st 3 picks next year and turn the 5 or 6 6th rounders into more than just bodies. My main concern is the survival & skill levels of our 3 core players in 2024 and 2025 - tough to build around a fading core.

Re: Snead kept to the plan
There’s a lot of homerism here. What Snead is actually saying is we fucked up and we have to wait a year or two to fix it and we might not fix it.
He makes it seem like it was the plan all along.
That wasn’t the plan, that is plan b because David Edwards wasn’t good, Brian Allen wasn’t good, Joe Noteboom wasn’t good, Robert Rochelle wasn’t good, Allen Robinson wasn’t good, Cam Akers wasn’t well who knows?, TuTu is ok but not good enough for a second round draft pick when you never have first round draft picks, Terrell Lewis wasn’t good, Hardy wasn’t good, etc….most everyone drafted from 2019 to 2022 wasn’t good, so that’s why we have to pretend this was the plan

Re: Snead kept to the plan
I believe the rams admitted to their mess ups. When you sign Allen Robinson and then trade him the following year. When you move on from Cam and VJ. When you have to cut Floyd and Wagner and take huge contract hits, it's obvious you screwed up. What I am happy about is that they aren't doubling down on their screw ups. They admit their mistakes and move on.therealheadslap75 wrote: ↑October 31st, 2023, 5:22 pm There’s a lot of homerism here. Also looks like they finally have a good mix of talent evaluators and scouts. They had a very good draft this year.

Re: Snead kept to the plan
Excellent post HS - Not an open atmosphere to deal in the reality of Snead & his draft record on this forum but your points are spot on / far too many whiffs on picks in rounds 2-4 and IMO this is the path to building a solid foundation of talent & long term success. Rams cannot afford it’s past draft performance in 2023.

Re: Snead kept to the plan
Of course we are homers.
And, you are correct. You can add Stenson Bennett to the list. Truth be told, we purchased the super bowl. Now, the checkbook was overdrawn and we are seeing the results.
This “retool” is going to take more than one year. Stafford is toast. Drafting a QB is a crapshoot and they take 2-3 years to develop even if they are very good.
In 2024, there aren’t any decent free agent QB’s available. Besides, even the mediocre veteran QB’s want way too much money.
So, they damn well better hit on the 2024 draft.
Drake Maye is my choice. I would trade up and up to grab him. Knowing Snead, we will draft someone none of us ever heard of.

On board with the Drake Maye pick - Williams is skilled but an entitled, egotistical headache we should avoid - Also agree that it is a real crap shoot in getting that franchise QB via the draft.

Re: Snead kept to the plan
How did Snead build the contending Rams?
#1. Draft Hall of Fame DT Aaron Donald
#2. Become bad enough to draft a competent QB on a rookie deal (Goff) which allowed the rest of the roster to be built up in free agency cap dollars
Right now, we have at least $37 mils committed to the QB position thru 2025. The Stafford extension has basically made the original Snead plan impossible to do.
I don’t know what his current plan is. Free agency is limited when you have 50 mils committed to the QB in 2024

Re: Snead kept to the plan
Going into 2024, Rams will have about 70mil in cap space. They could sign several blue chip FA’s with that. Just not the QB position, none will be available.Truth wrote: ↑October 31st, 2023, 6:35 pm How did Snead build the contending Rams?

Re: Snead kept to the plan
they need to get 5 solid players out of the draft and they have to make a splash in free agency. the roster is that weak

Re: Snead kept to the plan
Agree.
For the FA’s. Let’s assume they have 70mil. They spend 60mil of that in free agency. With an average of 12mil per year for each player, that would give them 5 solid free agents. Could spend more if they sign players to a lower annual salary and offer up a healthy signing bonuses or even back load the contracts. Not sure if there will be that many quality free agents that actually fill the needs we have.
Add 3-4 solid contributors from draft, and the roster dramatically improves.
Whatever they do, the team we are seeing now will definitely be much different than next year.
I am am assuming Snead actually pulls the trigger with a detailed plan.

We may HAVE fucked up .. but bet there are a lot of teams in the league that would like to "fuck up" and still walk away with a SB win under their belt.therealheadslap75 wrote: ↑October 31st, 2023, 5:22 pm There’s a lot of homerism here. The Rams chose a calculated risk to capitalize on a solid core and they got what we were looking for .. the Super Bowl win. Now we pay the football gods by dumping all our dead cap in ONE season, instead of bleeding from a thousand cuts over the next few years.
We, thankfully (Thank you Les!), will go into the offseason with a FULL complement of draft picks and a shit ton of cash, more than enough to get the team back on it's feet if we start evaluating our picks this season in game action, draft wisely and hit on the first few picks and stop taking flyers on guys, then spend in FA on KEY needs.
It would have been nice to get the win without baring the cupboards, but we didn't have the talent, hell we even had to bring back a guy two years retired to pull it off. So this year, our dues get paid and we can still appreciate the fact we GOT the BIG WIN.
I said at the time, it was worth it, I still say it was worth it, and it finally forced us to jettison a lot average or below talent from the roster and start over - in a very strong position, so ....

The Rams should be able to upgrade their offensive tackles. Seems lot of teams let these guys go in free agency and it’s how they Rams got Whitworth.
But looking at the rest of the guys, I don’t see much difference making talent. Mainly bc if you are good and in your prime, your teams are already resigning you before you hit free agency.
Re: Snead kept to the plan
I have complete faith that Snead-Demoff will continue to be the chronic screw-ups they have always been. Yes...they won one SB but only at the expense of years and years of future futility. To review....Demoff brought us the currently childish Ram's baby-nighty uniforms; Snead has bankrupted the Ram's roster and history shows that he has ZERO idea how to use the draft to start rebuilding.
I PROMISE posters here that until these two fools are shown the door we will never be any better than poor to mediocre.

Niners and everyone else still chasing what KC and Rams accomplished last 2 years. Some for the last 28 years. Hell some are now copying what the Rams did 2 years ago with only one team going to actually get it done and that could be KC again.
Most with a decent football IQ saw this season coming, it actually hasn’t been that bad so far, knew it had to happen, and applaud the Rams for clearing the deck this year for the next few years. And certainly now isn’t going to over react when we saw this happening 3 months ago.
And guess what some other teams are going to have to do soon and quite possibly without the only ultimate prize for this season………..

my guess is Snead is going to pull the trigger on a big time edge rusher. that is going to cost most of their cap space. which means the draft is beyond important. JMHOGlendoraRam wrote: ↑October 31st, 2023, 9:51 pmAgree.

McVay took over a 4-12 Rams roster. He went 11-5, 13-3, 9-7, 10-6, 12-5 and finally a Super Bowl win in his second try.therealheadslap75 wrote: ↑October 31st, 2023, 5:22 pm There’s a lot of homerism here. Pretty much losing as many assistant coaches along the way as the League has ever seen.
The all-in came at a price. They sucked last year (injuries or not). And this year began the actual rebuild thru what looks like a draft (2023) that f’ing knocked it out of the park. All I didn’t like about it was the Bennett selection in round 4 (said so at the time).
Next year is the real beginning with free agency and draft selections. This year is about an organizational tank (imo).
They have to hit on their draft selections. Lol, welcome to the NFL. I mean, sure, of course they do! I’d say a lot of Sneads drafts with McVay previously were more about filling holes. Now it’s about building a foundation.
And I’m not saying they haven’t blown a ton of draft picks (they have), and made horrible signings (THEY HAVE). But…who doesn’t? I’m looking more at win totals regardless.
Yes, based on McVay’s overall obvious success as HC with the Rams, I give them a few years as we watch a rebuild process.
What’s the opposite of homerism btw?

Re: Snead kept to the plan
He's be a complete idiot to be aggressive with this roster. You can't be aggressive with a declining old fart statue esque QB making 40 mil on your cap sheet next year. Kupp and AD are in decline too. This team could use some competent players and they should spend using their cap space, but building thru the draft is the way to do get a wave of talent in here.
Not sure Snead can pull it off. It's easy to deal draft picks for players. Can he draft and develop?
Biggest thing for the Rams is to lose as many games as possible starting this week in GB. They should feign a Stafford injury. Washington and NYG (who we both play) have started their tanks. We should too.

huge concern for me as well HOWEVER they did hit a HR in last year's draft with multiple players. Granted I am still pissed about the Bennett pick knowing what I know now. But Puka, Young and Aliva were solid picks.SoCalRam78 wrote: ↑November 1st, 2023, 11:14 am He's be a complete idiot to be aggressive with this roster. ocram23 wrote: ↑November 1st, 2023, 8:16 ammy guess is Snead is going to pull the trigger on a big time edge rusher. that is going to cost most of their cap space. which means the draft is beyond important. JMHOGlendoraRam wrote: ↑October 31st, 2023, 9:51 pm
How much do you think he's going to PAY the guy????
$75 mil in cap space. No EDGE is going to be more than $20m a year and that's nowhere near MOST. I'd like to see him snag SOLID LT/C/EDGE for no more than $50m a year combined. That still leaves $25 mil for draft picks some depth signings and maybe a trade deadline signing
Just cause we will actually HAVE Cap, doesn't mean I want Snead out there making it rain on one or two guys

If Snead signs a edge for 20 a year, it won't be 20 million against the 2024 cap. It would be something like 5 years for 100 million. With a additional 2 void years to spread out bonus.
28 million signing bonus (4 million a year spread over 7 years including 2 void years)
2024 - minimal 2.0 plus signing bonus of 4 million (6 million cap hit)
2025 - 10 million plus signing bonus of 4 million (14 million cap hit)
2026 - 20 million plus signing bonus of 4 million (24 million cap hit)
2027 - 20 million plus signing bonus of 4 million (24 million cap hit)
2028 - 20 million plus signing bonus of 4 million (24 million cap hit)
2029 void year 4 million cap hit
2030 void year 4 million cap hit
All the while the cap goes up and guys like AD, Stafford and Kupp deals come off as they move on before 2026 season

Re: Snead kept to the plan
depends because some of these guys won't sign unless they get a multi year that is why I said that. I hope you are right. But take Sweat for example. If he doesn't resign with the Bears he is going to want a big time deal. If you sign a guy like that you will use up most of your cap space.GoldenRam wrote: ↑November 1st, 2023, 3:06 pm

OK .. I'm by NO means a Cap guy .. so let me ask for some help here.
Salary Cap is going to be roughly $140 for the season, meaning all our signings must fit into that #, is that correct or no?
We have $75 avail. If we sign a guy 4/85 - that is then $21.25m off the $75 or no?
I know we aren't signing a bunch of 1 year FA deals, but the whole contract we sign can't count against the Cap or there would be no way to sign more than a handful of guys, for any team

Re: Snead kept to the plan
Nope it just means you take that 4/85 and split it up any way you want as long as you get to 85 after 4 years. Then there are void years. You can add 2 years to the contract, making it 6/85. The player is a free agent after 4 but now you can divide up the signing bonus over 6 years instead of 4. The signing bonus which is the guaranteed portion of the contract and gets spread out evenly throughout the length of the deal.GoldenRam wrote: ↑November 2nd, 2023, 1:51 pmocram23 wrote: ↑November 1st, 2023, 3:40 pm

So your 4 year 85 million contract you provided in your example could be 6 / 85 (includes 2 void years but the player is knly committed to the team for 4. Let's say out if the 85 million 24 million is guaranteed.
Take the 24 divide it by 6 equal 4. Then take the remaining 61 million and divide it into the 4 pretty much any way you want (must at least cover the minimal)
2024 - 7 million cap hit (4 million signing bonus plus 3 million salary) If Rams are under 75 million of cap space this leaves the Rams 68 million to spend in 2024.
2025 16 million cap hit ( 4 million signing bonus plus 12 million salary)
2026 25 million cap hit (4 million signing bonus plus 21 million salary)
2027 29 million cap hit ( 4 million signing bonus plus 25 salary)
2028 4 million cap hit (void year)
2029 4 million cap hit (void year)

Re: Snead kept to the plan
yes that is my bad. I think the whole point though is it depends on who we are talking. Burns, Sweat are going to be very expensive. Do we need one of these guys? absolutely but not sure it is worth it. JMHOGoldenRam wrote: ↑November 2nd, 2023, 1:51 pmocram23 wrote: ↑November 1st, 2023, 3:40 pm

Re: Snead kept to the plan
That's where I'm at. If we could find a LT and C who are solid and a little cheaper, we could grab one of those guys, but getting both could hurt the overall team improvement. We are going to have money, but we have to be somewhat judicious on how we spend it.ocram23 wrote: ↑November 2nd, 2023, 2:13 pmyes that is my bad.
