Rams are paying the price for their multi-year mismanagement of the quarterback position
“It’s fair to criticize the player and be disappointed with Brett Rypien’s performance against the Packers, but the team’s backup QB struggles were around long before Rypien arrived in Los Angeles. This is a years-long problem for the Rams, and it reflects poorly on the front office and coaching staff that they can’t seem to figure out a realistic solution.”
“Neither John Wolford nor Bryce Perkins were NFL-caliber passers and should not have backed up Jared Goff and Stafford the last few seasons. The Rams thought they solved their backup problem by selecting Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of this spring’s NFL Draft; however, Bennett has been mysteriously absent from the team and unlikely to return this season. Rypien was the team’s third option.”

Re: Rams are paying the price for their multi-year mismanagement of the quarterback position
And what I just read is correct.
This is one area where I absolutely cannot state anyone else is to blame than McVay. And yes I’m putting it on McVay. Rypien we saw during preseason against non starters could not play. He isn’t an NFL QB. But Sean kept him. Why? And no excuse once Bennett left. It was preseason when he left. McVay had plenty of time to bring in an actual back up QB……….
And the Wolford attempt last week was another why Sean. You didn’t see enough last year to know he can’t play? And save the he knows the system crap Sean. What good goes that do if the QB can’t play?
Absolutely doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate and still want him as our HC because of coarse I do. But he needs to be held accountable by the media in regards to his inability to not get the back up QB issue correct. Unacceptable.
And the question of should guys like Stafford now sit at 3-6. Of course not. This is the NFL. You play your players when they are healthy to play period. You play to win games with 8 games still remaining.

And I’ll add why the hell isn’t Evans being given a chance especially today with Rypien starting. You needed someone with “to the house” ability on any carry and the 2 who played today at RB damn well don’t have it.

Re: Rams are paying the price for their multi-year mismanagement of the quarterback position
We went for the shiny new toys almost every year..and neglected to find a quality backup QB and let quality Offensive Linemen leave and not replace them through the draft or trades. We aren't privy to how much say or not McVay has had throughout the years..but something has to change in the FO if this franchise wants to get back to the Super Bowl and become a Dynasty in the coming years.

I really want to know..what and why Evans hasn't had barely a sniff at playing? Is he really a headcase or a diva? Get that SOB out there!

Re: Rams are paying the price for their multi-year mismanagement of the quarterback position
FO would have gotten McVay a better back up QB this year if McVay wanted one. They proved that last year by getting Mayfield after the season was well under way.
Shiny new toys did not prevent McVay from doing a better job addressing the back up QB position this year.

I think many of us would when you see how well Nocua, Turner, Avila, and Young have played.Henry VIII wrote: ↑November 5th, 2023, 4:24 pmI really want to know..what and why Evans hasn't had barely a sniff at playing? Is he really a headcase or a diva? Get that SOB out there!
Once Williams went down I’m not sure what the benefit was in starting a journey man vet at RB with no break away speed. Back up sure but Evans should be the main RB until Williams comes back………

Re: Rams are paying the price for their multi-year mismanagement of the quarterback position
I suspect he is not comfortable yet with Evans in pass protection. Fact is if he is your starter he will have to pass protect on 1st and 2nd downs. A legit reason. But at least today with Stafford out I would think his running ability would have been more important. And at least today with Stafford out what was the harm in seeing where he may be at in regards to pass protection. It’s not like we threw the ball much on 1st and second downs anyways which was mentioned more than once during the broadcast.Henry VIII wrote: ↑November 5th, 2023, 4:51 pmExactly..get him out there!..Either he's in McVay’s dog house or something else is really wrong with him as a player.NorCal RF wrote: ↑November 5th, 2023, 4:31 pm

Re: Rams are paying the price for their multi-year mismanagement of the quarterback position
Yes..that's the something else that is wrong with him as a player..not willing to do the dirty work and pass block and isn't improving I guess. We all know that if you aren't willing to block on a McVay team you aren't going to see the field. But like you mentioned today was the best opportunity with the least amount of risk to get him out there. But it's almost if he doesn't exist on this team. I think he had 4 carries a few weeks back when Stafford was playing.NorCal RF wrote: ↑November 5th, 2023, 4:59 pmI suspect he is not comfortable yet with Evans in pass protection. Re: Rams are paying the price for their multi-year mismanagement of the quarterback position
Not willing to do the dirty work I suspect is not the case and probably an unfair comment. Pro game and college game in regards to running backs learning blitz pick-up is a big difference. It takes time. Again I suspect McVay just is more comfortable with 2 vets who have done it more at this level.Henry VIII wrote: ↑November 5th, 2023, 5:09 pmYes..that's the something else that is wrong with him as a player..not willing to do the dirty work and pass block and isn't improving I guess. But today IMO would have been a good day to get Evans in there. Not sure if we are that concern if Rypien would have been hit by a pass rusher.

Nokua, Young, Turner, and Avila are not lumps of coal. And Atwell and Williams have shown they can play once given the opportunity to do so. A start of building that foundation again. Unrelated to McVay didn’t and could have done much better with the back up QB. Fact is this team has no $$$ to sign FA this past off season.Henry VIII wrote: ↑November 5th, 2023, 5:30 pmNorCal RF wrote: ↑November 5th, 2023, 4:28 pm FO would have gotten McVay a better back up QB this year if McVay wanted one. If next years draft is as good as this past one this team should be back heading in the right direction again. But again unrelated to Rypien being on this team. He shouldn’t be.

I would play Winn, grab another young guy for BU QB and Staff would not play another down. I'd give AD and Coop the choice and if they want to sit, I'd do it. Get the rookies in there and see what they have. No point in risking another injury on Staff and gives him the better part of a year to work on that arm and be "healthy" for one last run, while we put ourselves in a good position to draft his successorNorCal RF wrote: ↑November 5th, 2023, 4:06 pm And what I just read is correct.

Something going on with this guy, and remember he had questions coming out. I don't recall what the deal was, but the issue(s) were being brought up leading up to the draft

He had problems with his Coaches. Evans was sent home from the state title game for violating the team’s cell phone policy and getting into arguments over this issue with coaches. The incident occurred just hours before the state title rematch with Duncanville. This was the second time this season Evans was suspended after missing two games for a violation of team rules.

There is always something wrong in the opinion of some of you with these guys. Yes I wish Evans was playing some but cannot it sometimes be the HC just feels the guy(s) playing are just a better option right now. We may not agree, again I’d like to see Evans some more, but can it just be a coaches decision no more no less instead of well there must be something wrong with the guy not playing.

Yes it can, however, when a player comes out with question marks in relation to conduct, it is not a stretch to wonder if there is something more than playing ability keeping that player off the field. At least in my mind. Obviously you feel different and that's fine, it does not, however invalidate my position

I would play Winn, grab another young guy for BU QB and Staff would not play another down. I'd give AD and Coop the choice and if they want to sit, I'd do it. Get the rookies in there and see what they have. No point in risking another injury on Staff and gives him the better part of a year to work on that arm and be "healthy" for one last run, while we put ourselves in a good position to draft his successor
Where exactly is the part where I said they wanted to sit? I said, having said that *I*, if I was in position, would sit Staff, mostly because I don't think he is healthy and this year means absolutely nothing. Given that, I would ask Coop and AD whar their preferences would be. I expect they would both want to play and so be it. I still see no reason to risk a potentially not fully healthy QB fighting for a 5-6 win season. Are 2 or 3 more wins that important?
Staff has a thumb injury that we know about. He has been mostly hot garbage all year long, so if the reason is his game is deteriorating that fast what good is having him out there. If, otoh, he has some issue with the arm/shoulder that we're not aware of, why keep him out there for a losing season where 2 or 3 more wins will do nothing but lower our draft position in a year we could REALLY use a high draft slot?
This is not a good team.
As for rookies, we have at least 1 OL not playing, Hampton and Van Valkenberg are not playing much, Hummel isn't seeing the field, Tomlinson is also not seeing the field a bunch. I think there might be another DB, but don't recall off hand all the draft picks. I'd also like to see the DLman we picked up from Detroit
If this team had playoff potential, maybe, but we'd have to win 5 or 6 of the last 8. I don't see it.
Again, we have different opinions and that's fine, I've told you why I would do what I said and you're free to disagree, but intentionally or no, we're anking (I left out the T for possible lack of intention) So why risk the health of a QB who suddenly has nothing BUT health issues?

Re: Rams are paying the price for their multi-year mismanagement of the quarterback position
In all honesty I think if it was up to McSnead they would have put Stafford on the 4 week disable list. Similar to what they did with Kupp. But Stafford is such a gamer that he is against it. Similar to how Kupp was which was why he ran out and got other opinions.
Rams aren't trying to win this year. Bennett was the guy the rams wanted to start and develop as a backup but once that went out the door my guess is the next move would be to draft a qb in tbe 1st round next year.
Rams, for the first time in McSnead era is in position to draft a franchise qb. I don't blame the Rams for wanting to take and improve on their opportunity to get one. Mcvay never had a chance to get his guy, this is the year.

Your backup QB should have the same skill set as your starter. I get it he wont be as good of course bbut he has to be able to throw it. If your offense is built around a thrower like Stafford then your backup better be able to throw the ball too or your offense needs to change. So the backup better at least be able to sling it. They cant be guy's who run around like Wolford and Perkins and they have to be better than Rypien at passing the ball. There must be better passers out there than Rypien.

this one pisses me off big time. why isn't evans playing? this team sucks so you might as well start playing your young guys to get them experience. starting to lose my patience with McVay

Nothing pisses me off big time that I have no control over.
As previously stated I would have liked to seen him play yesterday with Rypien playing. Rams needed a RB yesterday with more of a home run threat than Freeman and Henderson because of the inabilities of Rypien.

Come on, except for me... there is plenty of times I pissed you off to new levels.
Why?
Because you love me. It's deep between us.
