ESPN writer predicts Matthew Stafford will retire after 2023 season

Post by GlendoraRam »

“ To be clear, I have no inside information. But I watched how ready and optimistic Stafford was during the Rams’ training camp, and this season, while a known rebuild, has been brutal. It’s the second straight season in which he has gotten beat up every week, too, taking a sack on 7.5% of his dropbacks since the start of 2022. He has banked in the neighborhood of $300 million during his career. He has won a Super Bowl. And he has numbers that will merit serious Canton consideration. So factoring all that in, my prediction is that Stafford calls it a career after the season. “

I have thought this for months. I think hes done. I really do.

At most, he plays one more season because 1. $49M 2. Rams will beg him to take our new '24 drafted QB and or traded franchise QB to be under his wing. 3. Stafford is not a quitter.

But, I just think the writing is on the wall

I have to agree. 50mil is hard to walk away from even if you have already made hundreds of millions.
It’s ALWAYS about the money.

The rams could redo his contract that allows him to retire and still pocket 20 million while reducing his cap hit to 20 million over the next two years. 10 million cap hit 2024 and 10 million 2025.

If Stafford is indeed ready to hang it up Rams can give him a nice parting gift while reducing his cap hit. Will Stafford walk away from 50 if it means he can make 20 and not do nothing?

Not sure

I always wondered what happened with contracts when players retired, but from the little I read the other day it didn't appear to benefit the team in any way except deciding on when the transaction happens, either before or after June. Who here is the expert on that? It would make me feel sick to know the amount of money we would eat if Both Staff and Donald retired. What is that dead money hit?

"In business terms, it is essentially a "sunk cost." Any money a team pays a player must be accounted for against the salary cap. If there is dead money in a player's contract and he is released or retires, that charge will accelerate onto the team's salary cap for the current year." - interwebs

I was just going with the article that Stafford, after another year of beating, may want to retire. With that said, I doubt he do.

"I love this team. I love the city. It's been a blast," Stafford said. "Obviously had a bunch of success in our first year and trying to duplicate that to either this year, next year, whenever it is. But I enjoy playing too much to hang it up."
